'When I Saw You' to be Palestinian Oscar entry

Variety.com

BERLIN -- Annemarie Jacir's "When I Saw You" has been selected as the Palestinian territories' entry for consideration in next year's foreign-language Oscar.

Set in Jordan in 1967, the pic tells the story of an 11-year-old boy who runs away from a Palestinian refugee camp in his search for freedom.

"When I Saw You" will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 9.

Cologne-based sales company The Match Factory is handling worldwide rights for the film, which was produced by Ossama Bawardi and Jacir's Jordan-based Philistine Films.

It's Jacir's second Palestinian foreign Oscar entry following her 2008 debut feature "Salt of the Sea," which screened in Cannes.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the five nominees for best foreign film on Jan. 15. The 85th Academy Awards ceremony takes place Feb. 24.
